Alexandria, Virginia has two Saturday markets, one Sunday market, and a Wednesday evening market. The Old Town market is an institution in front of City Hall open all year round. While the Del Ray market is quintessential Alexandria located in a nestle of local shops, cute little houses, and plenty of locals walking around.

DC Mayor Adrian Fenty is Cycling the City

What happens to a city when the mayor is a bicycle fanatic?
By fanatic I mean training with a competitive cycling team, DC Velo, several days a week and shutting down streets so his police escort can keep up.

Our honorable mayor, Adrian Fenty, now 3 years into his term is changing the city inside and out to become bike friendly. In some brilliant ways, hilarious ways, and scary ways.
First the brilliant. The city now has borrow-a-bike stations where you can check-out and return bikes. The program is called SmartBikeDC. (claim: “America’s first …

Arlington Farmers Markets

We love our Arlington Farmers Markets.
Arlington, VA has six farmers markets on everyday except mondays and fridays. They are some of my favorites in the Washington DC region. Open after work and on your lunch break they are ideal for shopping. Go ahead and give them a chance and let me know what you experience.
Also, if you you’re interested in other regional markets I have included on this page the DC and Alexandria farmers markets (and a brochure too). They provide an incredible array of markets with diverse products at …

The USDA Wants You To “Know Your Farmer”

This morning I was fortunate to attend new media press event with Kathleen Merrigan, Deputy Secretary of Agriculture. A small group of us took a short trip outside of Washing DC to Tree and Leaf Farm. Which is exactly 47 miles away from the Dupont Farmers Market in the city, according to co-owner Georgia O’Neal.
The reason for this farm adventure was to launch a very special program for the USDA, called Know Your Farmer Know Your Food. The details of which are still coming out. DepSec Merrigan did clue us …

DC Mayor’s Conservation Corps

As summer comes to a close and school begins anew I wanted to take some time to highlight something special in DC. The Mayor’s Conservation Corps.
This is a city sponsored effort to provide district youth with social employment. They get paid $7.25/hour and participate in programs like graffiti removal, cleaning parks, community projects, outreach, and more.
It is really a fantastic program for our fair city, which is in need of some beautification. Especially the non-NorthWest affluent areas. Then our kids, oh gosh, have you seen some of these youngsters. If …
